What does Social Security mean by disability?

Disability means that you have severe physical and/or mental impairments that keep you from working for at least 12 months. You must not only be unable to do your past work but any other work that exists in the national economy that you could reasonably be expected to perform taking into consideration your age, education, and past work experience. Social Security will not take into consideration practical factors such as whether you would actually be hired due to your medical history or lack of available jobs or that the job may only pay minimum wage.
